Over time, Maramures hosted many important personalities, both of the bygone eras as of our time. Among the “enlighten heads” of this place, we can proudly remind:

Vasile Lucaciu Greco-catholic priest, militant for Romanian rights from Translivania;

WRITERS

Augustin Buzura – writer and essayist;

Petre Dulfu – doctor in philosophy;

Laszlo Nemeth – writer, essayist, playwright, translator;

Nicolae Steinhardt – essayist, reviewer, memoirist, philosopher;

Ion Siugariu – poet;

Ellie Wiesel – writer, Nobel Prize Laureate for Peace (1986).

ARTISTS

Founders of the Painting School from Baia Mare – Hollosy Simon, Ferenczy Karoly, Reti Istvan, Thorma Janos

Valentin Muste – valuable representative in life of the Painting School form Baia Mare;

Vida Gheza – was a very important modern sculptor from Maramures, corresponding member of Romanian Academy;

Ioan Marchiș – sculptor, former pupil of the Art School Baia Mare, graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts “Ion Andreescu” Cluj Napoca, member of Artists Union from Romania;

Dudas Iulin – founder and professor at Art School Baia Mare, Honory Citizen of the city Baia Mare;

Mircea Mureșan – artist, former pupil at the Art School Baia Mare.

MUSICIANS:

Liviu Borlan – composer, former professor at the Art School Baia Mare;

Dora Cojocaru – composer (Canada), former pupil at the Art School Baia Mare, graduated at the Music Academy “Gh. Dima” Cluj Napoca;

Gheorghe Costin – former pupil at the Art School Baia Mare, conductor, graduated at National University of Music from Bucharest, Honory Citizen of the city Baia Mare;

Paula Seling – former pupil of the Art School Baia Mare, pop music singer, represented Romania at the Eurovision in 2010;

Moș Diana – violonist – The Ansamble „Profil”, lecturer of the National University from Bucharest;

Cristina Gorgan – flutist (France), former pupil of the Art School Baia Mare;

Romeo Cornelius Văsuț – countertenor, sang on the biggest scenes of the world, former pupil of the Art School Baia Mare;

Vida Ecaterina – piano teacher, former director of the Art School Baia Mare for 15 years – the wife of the sculptor Vida Gheza;

Ciprian Rogojan – percussion, former pupil of the Art School Baia Mare, it is a member of the well-known band “Sistem”, represented Romania at the Eurovision in 2005;

Frații Petreuș – Ștefan și Ion – popular music singers, the current formula is Petreuș family composed from Stefan and his son Andrei – graduate of the Music Academy “Gh. Dima” Cluj Napoca, former pupil of the Art School Baia Mare;

Dumitru Fărcaș – an well-known taragotist of the Romanian popular music;

Grigore Leșe – singer of Romanian popular music, graduated the Music Academy “Gh. Dima” Cluj Napoca, doctor in Music and associate professor at the Faculty of Letters, University Bucharest and Music University, Bucharest;
